Why It Matters

The receipt reads differently depending where you shop.

66¢

Of every dollar spent at a small, local business in Canada, 66 cents stays in the local economy. At a large multinational retailer that drops to 11 cents β€” and to just 8 cents at an online giant.

92%

92% of Canadians say they love having small businesses in their community β€” but only 13% actually do most of their shopping there. The other 87% spend most of their money at large multinational retailers.

CFIB, media release, Oct 19, 2023
46.6%

Small businesses are 98.2% of all employer businesses in Canada and employ 5.8 million people β€” 46.6% of all private-sector jobs.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, "Key Small Business Statistics 2025"
97%

97% of small retailers give back to their community in some way β€” 74% donate to local charities, 56% sponsor local events or teams, 55% create jobs for young people.

Corporate Ownership

Private Equity & Corporate Consolidation

Look for a purple ring (U.S. or Multinational) or a pink ring (Canadian) around a pin β€” these highlight where private equity, either with U.S. & foreign investment, or Canadian P.E. investment, is active in your city. The rings reflect our research into each brand's current owner, as of September 2026 — deals close and ownership changes, so if you spot something out of date, please tell us. Corporate and private-equity roll-ups acquiring local businesses can impact neighbourhoods and in some cases make it more difficult for local and independent businesses to survive.

25%

Roughly 25% of veterinary clinics, 5% of dental offices, and about half of pharmacies in Canada are now corporately owned.

Indigenous Ownership

Some ownership stories are worth celebrating, not just tracking.

Alongside the flags above, a teal ring marks an Indigenous-owned business β€” not a caution, an invitation. That research hasn't started yet for the Vancouver-area map (the filter is here and ready, currently at zero), but it's part of the plan: Indigenous entrepreneurs launch new businesses at five times the rate of non-Indigenous Canadians, and Indigenous-led enterprises now contribute more than $31 billion a year to the Canadian economy across 50,000-plus businesses.

What the Map Shows

Every pin is a chance to explore and support your city.

Ownership at a Glance

Each business is flagged by where the company that ultimately controls its brand is headquartered β€” Canada, the U.S., or another country β€” right on the pin, and again when you click in. Researched brands get a flag; local businesses we haven't researched yet are marked NV (ownership not verified).

A Canadian Alternative

On the Edmonton map, clicking a U.S. brand often surfaces a nearby Canadian alternative. That matching hasn't been done for Vancouver yet β€” it's next on the list.

For Business Owners

Can't find your business on the map, or is it marked NV (ownership not verified)? Tell us and we'll add it or verify it as locally owned. Want your local Canadian business to stand out from the multinational brands nearby? Ask about our featured listings. We'd like to hear from you.

About This Project

Why we built this.

Find Local started with a simple question: when you spend money at a business in your neighbourhood, where does it actually go? We matched public business licence data against a set of roughly 500 chain and franchise ownership patterns to trace who ultimately owns the brands you find in your neighbourhood — a Canadian company, a U.S. multinational, or one of several other countries.

The map shows two kinds of pins. Flagged pins are businesses we could confidently match to a known chain, franchise, or parent company, each with its country of ownership identified through our research. Pins marked NV (ownership not verified) are local businesses from municipal licence data that aren't chains we've researched: mostly single-location independents, plus some small local chains. We haven't confirmed who owns them yet. If you own one, or your business is missing, use the “Add or verify your business” link and we'll confirm ownership and update your pin. Once verified, any local business can also choose a paid featured listing to stand out on the map: use the “Ask about Featured listings” link. Our goal is to include every verified locally owned business, so consumers can easily find and support local businesses in their communities.

This map currently covers Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, and Port Moody β€” the connected core of the region. New Westminster, Richmond, Coquitlam, the North Shore, and Langley are planned for a later phase, once we're able to source usable location data for each. Find Local is an independent research project. It is not affiliated with any city or provincial government, or any business or brand named on the map.

Find Local - YVR

Every pin is a business with an active licence in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, or Port Moody. Researched brands are flagged by the country of the company that ultimately owns them; local businesses we haven't researched yet are marked NV (ownership not verified).

Filter the map

NV = ownership not verified. A local business from municipal licence data that isn't a chain we've researched, usually a single-location independent or a small local chain. Not yet confirmed with the owner.
Positions from Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, and Port Moody open business licence data. Businesses sharing one address (e.g. a mall) start out grouped into a single number β€” zoom in or click it to split them apart.
Ownership is researched brand by brand as of September 2026 and can change when deals close β€” see something wrong? Let us know.
